Before-and-after photos that win jobs
Five minutes on site and two good photos. Where to stand, what to show and what to leave out.
Why they work
A before-and-after shows in one glance what you do and how well you do it. Nobody has to read a word to understand it, which is why these posts get shared.
Take the before photo first
It's easy to forget the before photo once work starts. Make it the first thing you do on site, right after you say hello.
How to take them
- Stand in the same spot for both photos, at the same height.
- Use the same light. Turn the same lights on, or shoot at the same time of day.
- Hold the phone upright for Instagram and Facebook. A tall 4:5 frame fills more of the screen.
- Clean the lens on your shirt. It makes more difference than any setting.
- Show the whole area first, then one close-up of the detail you are proud of.
What to leave out
- House numbers, street signs and car plates.
- Family photos, mail and anything personal.
- Faces, unless people have said yes.
Ask the customer if you can share the photos. Most people are happy to say yes, and some will share the post themselves.
Two honest photos from the job beat any stock image.
